Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils navigated a tense final-set super tiebreak to secure their place in the US Open mixed doubles semifinals.
“There was a lot of tension,” Svitolina said post-match. “Thanks to this guy [Monfils] bringing me a few points here and there.”
Monfils, who celebrated with his characteristic flair by showing off some dance moves, was asked about playing doubles with his wife, to which he replied with a smile, “Happy wife, happy life,” drawing laughter from the crowd.
The pairing became the first to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament’s mixed doubles competition.
