India Seek to Defend Women’s Cricket Gold Against Sri Lanka at Asian Games

Nagoya, September 21: India will aim to extend their dominance in Asian cricket when they take on Sri Lanka in the women’s gold medal match at Korogi Athletic Park on Tuesday. Both India’s men’s and women’s teams are in strong positions to retain their continental titles, with only an off day capable of denying them gold.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s side reached the final with convincing wins over Japan and Bangladesh. Victory on Tuesday would further reinforce India’s status as the leading team in the region. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their recent Asia Cup campaign and upset the favourites.

Sri Lanka will rely heavily on another impactful performance from captain Chamari Athapaththu. Her excellent 82 off 50 balls helped Sri Lanka chase down a challenging target against Pakistan, but India will present a far tougher test in the final.

India have entered the match in impressive form, with their top order delivering consistently and Shafali Verma leading the attack. The team management has continued to assess the No. 3 role, handing the position to G Kamalini against Bangladesh after Bharti Fulmali was given the opportunity against Japan. Kamalini had opened alongside Shafali in the quarterfinal.

Captain Harmanpreet will also be eager to deliver a strong performance after a disappointing Asia Cup campaign. A decisive contribution in the gold medal match would provide a major boost to both the skipper and the team.
