While the Week 2 conditions were poor due to rain, the inconsistency is a defining trait of the roster. The Bears will fluctuate dramatically week to week. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams showed immense potential in Week 1, but his hamstring injury and subsequent poor performance make MVP discussions unlikely in the near term. The offense is incredibly young, with key contributors like Luther Burden, Colston Loveland, Rome Odunze, and Kyle Monangai all in their early twenties, though veterans like Kalif Raymond, Joe Thuney, and Garrett Bradbury provide stability. When Williams is healthy, the offense will display its high-scoring potential, potentially even with backup Tyson Bagent. However, the Week 2 struggles were not a fluke, and similar issues will persist when Williams returns. This unpredictability challenges head coach Ben Johnson, who demands perfection. While the young players will make mistakes, Johnson must manage their variable performances as the season progresses.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is experiencing a notable regression in 2026. While his decline was anticipated following his impressive 2025 season and the loss of receiver A.J. Brown to a high ankle sprain, his current play resembles his 2024 rookie year more than his 2025 MVP runner-up form. Maye has struggled significantly with situational awareness, displaying excessive arm arrogance. His interception against the Steelers in Week 2 was a reckless and unnecessary risk. Maye himself acknowledged this, stating that it was not the right time to take a shot on first down. Despite having eleven days to recover from his previous mental errors against the Seahawks, he succumbed to another lapse. While tight end Hunter Henry accepted responsibility for the errant throw, the fundamental issue lies in Maye’s decision-making. He repeatedly forces the ball into dangerous situations when the Patriots possess a commanding lead and an elite defense. Against the Seahawks, three consecutive interceptions derailed the game, and his single interception against the Steelers similarly threatened the outcome. This represents a reverse maturation for Maye. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and head coach Mike Vrabel must figure out how to rein him in and restore his previous form.

The Detroit Lions’ defense failed to contain Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who has been historically dominant, recording nine touchdowns in the first two weeks. Allen is only the second quarterback in the Super Bowl era to achieve this feat. Despite the Lions employing an aggressive blitzing strategy—blitzing Allen on 55.3% of his dropbacks, the highest rate he has faced in five seasons—the result was disastrous. Allen’s mental processing has improved, allowing him to diagnose and defeat the blitzes that previously plagued him in crucial moments. On offense, quarterback Jared Goff has struggled to connect with receiver Jameson Williams. Despite Goff throwing for 533 yards and six touchdowns, Williams has only six catches for 78 yards and no touchdowns, converting just 46% of his targets. While tight end Sam LaPorta has returned and running back Jahmyr Gibbs is contributing more in the passing game, Williams’s inability to make big plays is concerning. The Lions defense requires immediate and extensive correction before their upcoming matchup.

The Green Bay Packers’ 20-17 overtime victory over the Jets was a painful process for the franchise. Head coach Matt LaFleur faced intense scrutiny as the offense appeared sluggish and quarterback Jordan Love looked overwhelmed without adequate support from the offensive line or run game. This loss extended LaFleur’s losing streak to five consecutive games, dating back to the 2025 season, highlighting severe deficiencies in his in-game management. However, LaFleur is unlikely to be dismissed. He recently signed a substantial contract extension, guaranteeing him a lengthy leash well into 2027. The Packers and LaFleur are effectively a package deal for the foreseeable future. While Love is only 27 years old and his championship window is naturally narrowing, extending LaFleur’s tenure may further constrain that window. Until LaFleur addresses his longstanding weaknesses, his presence will likely obstruct Love’s path to a Super Bowl. Despite the frustration, Green Bay has no alternative but to maintain faith in LaFleur for now.
