CAPE TOWN: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed the group stage fixtures for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, setting the stage for a dramatic tournament as India is slated to take on defending champions Australia and arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening matches.

The highly anticipated clash between India and Australia, a rematch of the 2023 final, is scheduled for October 7 in Cape Town. Just three days later, on October 10, India will face Pakistan in Johannesburg, promising an intense and emotionally charged encounter.

The tournament, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, will commence on October 2 and culminate in the final on November 21. The India-Pakistan match will be held at the Wanderers Stadium, the largest venue in the competition, where demand for tickets is expected to be exceptionally high.

Group A will also feature Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and one qualifying team. Zimbabwe will host all their group matches, with games planned in Bulawayo, Harare, and a final group fixture against India at Victoria Falls.

In Group B, South Africa is set to begin their campaign against New Zealand in Cape Town on October 9. The opening match of the group will see England take on Bangladesh in Windhoek, Namibia, a day earlier on October 8. England will further test their mettle against South Africa on October 16 and New Zealand on October 23, both in Gqeberha. Sri Lanka and another qualifier complete the lineup for Group B.

Star Indian batsman Virat Kohli, aged 37, announced during the launch event in Cape Town that this World Cup will be his last, emphasizing his drive to give his all. “The intensity of a World Cup is unparalleled. Sustaining that for ten games in foreign conditions is demanding, but my goal is to leave everything on the field,” Kohli stated.

Australian captain Pat Cummins highlighted the significance of the opening match against India, noting, “Playing India always feels monumental, with a billion fans watching. I’m still frequently reminded of the 2023 final, and we’re motivated for revenge.”

The tournament format includes a preliminary round to eliminate the two lowest-ranked teams, after which the remaining twelve teams will be divided into two groups for round-robin matches. The top three from each group, along with the best fourth-placed team, will advance to the Super Seven phase, leading to semifinals and the final.

The India-Pakistan rivalry, intensified by political tensions, has been confined to ICC events since their last bilateral series in 2012. India has maintained an unbeaten record against Pakistan in World Cup matches, winning all eight encounters, and eight out of nine in T20 World Cups, adding to the stakes of their upcoming clash.
