India has competed in 14 T20I matches in England, beginning with the 2009 T20 World Cup, where they played five encounters. Since that tournament, numerous players have excelled in the shortest format on English soil, particularly in the batting department.
At present, former captain Rohit Sharma holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in T20Is in England. In 12 innings, the right-handed batsman accumulated 335 runs at an average of 33.50, with a strike rate of 133.46.
Rohit’s debut in England occurred during the 2009 T20 World Cup against Bangladesh at Trent Bridge, where he scored 36 runs. His maiden half-century in the country came in the subsequent match against Ireland at the same venue, an unbeaten 52 that secured an eight-wicket victory for India.
Following periods of lower scores in 2011 and 2018, Rohit delivered his most impactful performance in England. During the third T20I against the hosts in Bristol, the opening batsman struck an unbeaten 100 off 56 balls, leading India to a seven-wicket win after successfully chasing 199. To date, he remains one of only three Indian batters to achieve a triple-digit score in T20Is in England, alongside KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav.
Rohit’s final T20I in England took place during India’s 2022 white-ball tour. He managed just 11 runs in the third and concluding T20I at Trent Bridge, yet still guided India to a 2-1 series triumph despite the narrow 17-run loss.
Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav follow Rohit in the list of most runs by Indian players in England. Kohli scored 192 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 133.33, averaging 32. Suryakumar, with 177 runs in three innings, boasts a strike rate exceeding 200, including an unbeaten 117 off 55 balls in the very match that marked Rohit’s last T20I in England.
