Iraq’s hopes of advancing from the 2026 World Cup group stage were dealt a decisive blow after a 5-0 loss to Senegal at Toronto Stadium, ending their campaign bottom of Group I with no points.
The comprehensive defeat marked Iraq’s third consecutive loss in the group, during which they conceded 12 goals overall. Senegal, sitting third in the group with three points and a +2 goal difference, entered the match level on points with Iraq but held more hope due to their superior goal differential. France and Norway had already secured the top two spots, joining Norway in the Round of 32.
The match descended into an unflattering contest for Iraq within the first quarter-hour. Habib Diarra inadvertently diverted Abdoulaye Seck’s header into his own net in the fourth minute, followed by a red card for Iraq’s Rebin Sulaka on the 14th minute for halting Sadio Mane’s goal-scoring opportunity. These setbacks allowed Senegal to dominate possession and capitalize strategically.
Senegal’s relentless attack materialized into goals on 55th and 58th minutes through Sarr and Pape Gueye respectively, with Iliman Ndiaye sealing the rout in the 83rd minute. Despite Iraq’s disciplined defensive showing until halftime, Senegal’s superior preparation and clinical finishing ultimately dictated the outcome. Goalkeeper Ahmed Basil was substituted at halftime for Jalal Hassan, who preserved Iraq’s resilience with crucial saves in the second half before succumbing to further lapses in concentration.
Now, Senegal’s qualification depends entirely on results from the final group matches, though their positive goal differential provides a modest lifeline as they await the outcomes of France and Norway’s fixtures.
