Italian Horror Thriller ‘The Spiral’ Earns 9-Minute Ovation at Venice Premiere

The Venice Film Festival has introduced a new source of delight.

The local audience erupted in excitement during the world premiere of The Spiral, a lively and entertaining Italian horror thriller directed by Paolo Strippoli, known for his works The Holy Boy and A Classic Horror Story.

The film stars Jasmine Trinca, recognized for Saint Laurent and The Caiman, as Anna, a domineering mother who enters into a pact with the devil—embodied by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi in a trench coat and chain-smoking persona—to save her daughter Alice, played by Romana Maggiora Vergano, following a horrific accident. This deal triggers a series of macabre events that ultimately fracture the family. Adriano Giannini portrays Anna’s wealthy, assertive husband Walter, while Andrea Genovese plays their son Tobia.

This intricate horror film, venturing into Grand Guignol style with over-the-top performances—highlighted by Tedeschi’s brilliant portrayal—might not be a favorite for the Golden Lion, but it resonated deeply with the Venice audience, who responded with a warm and enthusiastic standing ovation. The director and cast encouraged the crowd to continue applauding, extending the ovation beyond nine minutes.

It remains uncertain if this reception will sway the Venice jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, director of The Bride!. However, in a festival where entertainment has been scarce, The Spiral served as a refreshing palate cleanser.

The Spiral is set to screen next at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section. Le Pacte, handling international sales, anticipates strong prospects. Given its high-concept premise, remake rights may also be considered.

The film will be released in Italian theaters on October 8 by 01 Distribution.
