Jake Weatherald, South Australia’s opener, was withdrawn from the season‑opening Sheffield Shield clash against Victoria after a delayed concussion resulted from a boundary‑fence collision while fielding on day one at Junction Oval.
In the 24th over of the first morning, Weatherald pursued a cover drive from Ollie Peake to the rope, dove head‑first to retrieve the ball, missed, and continued sliding past the rope before striking the back of his head against the base of a metal advertising hoarding on the boundary pickets.
He was assisted to his feet by a teammate and showed no immediate symptoms, allowing him to remain in the field for the rest of the day and to open the batting when South Australia needed to face an eight‑over spell after bowling Victoria out for 244. He faced only six balls, edging a fine delivery from Victorian debutant Harry Hoekstra to the wicket‑keeper for a duck.
On the morning of day two, Weatherald was removed from the match after experiencing delayed concussion symptoms overnight. South Australia replaced him with former New South Wales wicket‑keeper‑batter Matthew Gilkes, who is making his Shield debut for the new state and will be available to bat in South Australia’s second innings.
Weatherald will now be monitored and must be symptom‑free for a prescribed period before he can return to play, making his availability doubtful for South Australia’s round‑two Shield fixture against Queensland in Adelaide, scheduled to begin on October 19.
The incident marks a difficult start to his return to South Australia after being omitted from Australia’s Test squad in August, during which he managed just one half‑century in twelve innings across his first six Tests. Prior to his Shield comeback, Weatherald had struck a 92 in his sole One‑Day Cup appearance for South Australia.
