The Democratic Socialist candidate has pledged a defiant stance against President Trump, who has threatened to seize federal control of the capital if she takes office.
Washington, DC – Janeese Lewis George, a Democratic Socialist known for her confrontational approach toward President Donald Trump, is poised to become the next mayor of Washington, DC.
Following a commanding lead in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, Lewis George’s path to victory was virtually secured on Thursday when her primary rival, Kenyan McDuffie, officially conceded.
Given the district’s strong Democratic lean, the primary winner is almost certain to secure the general election in November. While independent and third-party candidates may still compete, there is currently no Republican challenger for the position.
A former prosecutor and current council member, Lewis George earned the backing of labor organizations by promising to establish strict boundaries with the Trump administration. Her platform includes ending local police cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). If elected, she would be the first member of the Democratic Socialists of America—a group that includes Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani—to lead the capital.
In contrast, former councilmember Kenyan McDuffie positioned himself as a moderate, drawing support from the city’s business community. His approach mirrored that of current Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has attempted to balance cooperation with the White House alongside critical oversight.
President Trump has explicitly expressed his opposition, suggesting he might “take back Washington and run it on the federal basis” should Lewis George be elected.
As a federal district, Washington, DC, is subject to significant influence from Congress and the White House. However, a 1973 “home-rule” law grants residents the right to elect their own mayor, council, and neighborhood commissioners to manage daily operations.
The push for DC statehood remains a central issue for the city’s 700,000 residents, a cause supported by both Lewis George and McDuffie.
Since assuming office last January, Trump has frequently threatened to increase federal oversight of the city. His previous actions include the brief federalization of the local police department in August of last year citing a crime emergency, an increase in federal immigration enforcement, and the deployment of the National Guard for a “beautification” initiative.
In response to these threats leading up to the primary, Lewis George emphasized the necessity of a firm resistance.
“We are not going to get ICE off our streets or protect Home Rule by fearing this President,” she stated.
“Threatening DC because you do not like how our residents vote is an attack on democracy itself. The people of DC elect the Mayor of DC, and they want someone who will stand up to Trump,” she added.
