Democratic leader projects at least 255 House seats and pledges affordability-focused governance.
Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries celebrated his party’s sweeping victory in the United States midterm elections on Wednesday, characterizing the results as an “American tsunami” after Democrats secured control of both congressional chambers.
“It wasn’t simply a blue wave. It was an American tsunami,” Jeffries declared at a news conference, referencing upset wins in several Republican strongholds.
Jeffries stated Democrats anticipate securing at least 255 House seats once vote counts are finalized, a margin he described as a historic majority.
“The American people have chosen common sense over corruption, chaos and cruelty,” he said.
Poised to become the first Black Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes in January, Jeffries said the outcome signaled a demand for a change in direction.
“We’re humbled by the outcome,” he said, promising a “relentless effort to make life more affordable for everyday Americans.”
Earlier on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Jeffries emphasized that Democrats would prioritize governance over retribution against President Donald Trump and his allies.
“We ran on affordability. We won on affordability. And now it’s our job to govern on affordability,” he said.
Democrats campaigned on reducing the soaring costs of groceries, fuel, housing, and healthcare that have strained household budgets. However, with President Trump threatening to veto legislation he opposes, the party may face obstacles enacting new laws despite its congressional majority.
Jeffries cited a bipartisan housing affordability bill passed in July as a template for future action. That measure became law without the president’s signature after he dismissed it as “a yawn” and “so unimportant.”
Jeffries also affirmed Democrats would pursue accountability for any Trump administration wrongdoing, while acknowledging voters want results rather than reprisal.
“There’s a cost to corruption,” he said, adding that Democrats would “follow the facts and the law, and let the chips fall where they may.”
