Despite utilizing wigs and prosthetic breasts for his role in Maddie’s Secret, John Early maintains that his performance is not a form of drag.
The Magnolia Pictures comedy, currently in theaters, marks Early’s directorial debut. While he portrays a woman in the film, he admitted that he lacks the specific expertise required for professional drag.
“When I’m asked about if I classify this as drag, I don’t think I do,” Early told Queerty. “I love drag—I worship drag! I’ve done drag once, in a bar setting, and I was awful at it. It’s a different skill, and I’m not strong enough!”
Early elaborated that whereas drag typically emphasizes an exaggerated performance of gender, the character of Maddie Ralph is intended to be “humble and small” by comparison.
Although he noted that the physical layers of the costume could become “hot and heavy,” he found the process of stepping into the character’s mindset to be seamless.
In the film, Early portrays Maddie, a food influencer who achieves online fame while working for a trendy company. However, the stress of her rapid success eventually triggers the resurgence of a secret from her troubled past.
The movie features a strong ensemble cast, including Kate Berlant, Eric Rahill, Kristen Johnston, Claudia O’Doherty, Conner O’Malley, Vanessa Bayer, and Chris Bauer.
