John Malkovich Returns to Israel for Satirical Musical ‘The Music Critic’

Two‑time Oscar nominee and Emmy‑winning actor John Malkovich will return to Israel on April 13 to headline the satirical musical‑theater work *The Music Critic* at Tel Aviv’s Charles Bronfman Auditorium (Heichal Hatarbut).

*The Music Critic*, conceived and written by Russian‑German Jewish violinist and composer Aleksey Igudesman, merges iconic classical pieces with history’s harshest written critiques of those works.

On stage, Malkovich portrays a mordant critic who berates legendary composers, dismissing Robert Schumann as merely “pretending to be a composer,” calling Johannes Brahms a “giftless bastard,” and labeling Beethoven’s and Chopin’s works as tedious.

A live ensemble led by Igudesman and pianist Hyung‑ki Joo counters Malkovich’s verbal barbs with live performances of the contested pieces by Bach, Mozart, Debussy, and Prokofiev.

The show culminates with Malkovich reciting a harsh critique of his own career

The performance ends with a grand finale titled “The Malkovich Torment,” in which the actor reads a genuine, scorching critique of his own professional trajectory.

The production has toured widely across Europe and the United States and is also available as an official album.

The announcement arrives at a scarce moment for international cultural bookings in Israel, which have been hampered by disruptions and boycotts linked to the ongoing regional conflict.

Malkovich expressed enthusiasm for his return: “I am thrilled to return to Israel and look forward to meeting the warm Israeli audience once again, to whom I feel a strong closeness and solidarity. I hope to find you happy and optimistic! Sending you much love.”

Israeli producer Alon Yuryk said the engagement bodes well for a broader revival of major international performances in the country. “It is deeply moving to see Malkovich’s heartwarming responsiveness to performing here,” Yuryk added. “I view this as a trust‑building step toward reviving major international performances in Israel.”

Third Israel appearance since 2008 Jerusalem Film Festival guest slot

The April 2027 show will be Malkovich’s third professional visit to Israel. He debuted as a festival guest in July 2008 at the Jerusalem Film Festival and returned for his first stage appearance in April 2013, starring in the musical drama *The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer* at the Eilat International Chamber Music Festival and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

At 72, Malkovich is best known for his celebrated film roles in *Places in the Heart*, *In the Line of Fire*, *Dangerous Liaisons*, *Con Air*, and *Being John Malkovich*.

In a 2020 interview with Walla, Malkovich was asked which characters most closely reflect his real personality. He replied that he shares little in common with the serious or intellectual types he often portrays.

He noted that roles such as those in *Of Mice and Men* and the eccentric showman in *The Great Buck Howard* feel more true to his actual self.

He added, “In real life, I’m not a serious person.”
