New International Flotilla Embarks to Confront Gaza Blockade

Human rights advocates urge diplomatic intervention to ensure vessel safety and dismantle the blockade.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) has launched a new international initiative, with ships making stops at European ports before attempting to reach Gaza later this month.

The coalition stated that its mission to defy Israel’s “illegal and deadly blockade of Gaza” will proceed despite the violent repercussions faced by previous volunteers and activists, including documented incidents of severe beatings, repeated tasing, and sexual assault.

It emphasized that immediate action is critical, particularly as global attention has waned since the ceasefire was announced in October 2025.

According to the coalition, two vessels have already departed. The Handala II traversed Scandinavia during June and July, making stops in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, while the ship Kate left Bristol, UK, earlier this month and has since called at ports in Ireland, Germany, and France.

Further stops in Spain, Portugal, and Italy are scheduled before the flotilla continues its journey toward Gaza.

Demands and Calls

“The Freedom Flotilla sets sail again because our governments persistently fail to uphold their obligations,” stated Zohar Chamberlain Regev, a member of the FFC Steering Committee.

“At every port, we will advocate for the right of Palestinians to live with dignity,” he added.

The mission has attracted support from human rights advocates, peace activists, elected officials, journalists, medical professionals, and Palestinian rights supporters.

The coalition is urging governments to guarantee safe passage for the flotilla, pressure Israel to cease obstructing food, water, and medicine from entering Gaza, declare that any attack or seizure of vessels will provoke diplomatic consequences, and employ diplomatic and economic measures to end the blockade.

“We are aware that sailing toward Gaza entails significant risks,” noted Edward Digilio, an engineer from Maryland participating in the mission. “However, silence and inaction impose an even greater cost on Palestinians and the international community.”

Israeli Interception and Abuse

The coalition traces its origins to 2010, when Israeli forces killed ten activists aboard the Mavi Marmara during a previous flotilla attempt, as well as the Free Gaza Movement’s inaugural voyages in 2008.

Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla twice within the past year, detaining over 450 participants in October 2025—including South African author Zukiswa Wanner and Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela—and approximately 175 more in April 2026.

Amnesty International reported documenting sleep deprivation, denial of water and medical care, and other forms of ill-treatment inflicted upon activists held by Israel after their ships were intercepted and stormed.

Activists Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek were held incommunicado for days in April and had their detention extended partly based on secret evidence before ultimately being deported.

Humanitarian Conditions in Gaza

This mission joins numerous aid organizations that have characterized Gaza’s humanitarian situation as reaching crisis levels despite the ceasefire.

UNICEF estimates that over 82 percent of families remain water insecure, and approximately 90 percent of water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed.

In recent weeks, Israel has continued to target hospitals, aid warehouses, and medical supply sites within Gaza.

Gaza’s Health Ministry has recorded more than 1,300 deaths from Israeli fire since the truce took effect in October, alongside thousands of individuals still missing or believed trapped under rubble.
