John Ternus will become Apple Inc.’s chief executive officer effective September 1, taking charge as the company gears up for an imminent product launch while facing pressure to close its artificial‑intelligence gap with rivals.
Tim Cook, who headed Apple for fifteen years, will transition to executive chairman on the same day. He told staff he will remain involved in managing Apple’s ties with the U.S. administration under President Donald Trump and the Chinese government, and will be available to support Ternus as needed, Bloomberg reported. Additionally, Art Levinson, the incumbent board chair, will assume the role of lead independent director effective September 1, Apple announced.
At 51, Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and advanced to senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021. His inaugural major test as CEO arrives on September 9, when Apple holds a product launch at its Cupertino campus expected to unveil the first foldable iPhone, updated Apple Watch models, and a refreshed Siri voice assistant driven by large‑language models, the company said.
The state of Apple’s artificial‑intelligence efforts represents the most pressing challenge Ternus inherits. Criticism has mounted over the sluggish Siri overhaul and the company’s generative‑AI progress, prompting a leadership reshuffle in the AI group and a decision to rebuild Siri on Google’s Gemini platform. A broad rollout of the revamped Siri is slated for September, with early feedback described as positive by Bloomberg.
Beyond AI, Ternus oversees a wider hardware portfolio he cultivated during his tenure as head of hardware engineering, including environment‑sensing AirPods, smart glasses, a home‑security system, a robot‑arm‑mounted display, and a wearable pendant. Several of these initiatives have been delayed pending the readiness of Apple’s AI software to support them.
In his last earnings call as CEO, Cook highlighted Apple’s capacity to run AI workloads on‑device as a strategic edge versus cloud‑reliant rivals, noting that the company anticipates “enormous opportunities” in the AI arena moving forward.
Regarding supply‑chain and financial matters—areas where Cook earned his reputation—Ternus is expected to rely on Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan and Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh rather than handling those issues personally. Apple continues to grapple with a lingering shortage of memory and storage chips, a factor it has linked to recent price hikes and does not anticipate resolving before next year.
