The Air Guitar World Championships operate on a simple premise: make air, not war. Organizers state that the annual event aims to foster global peace.
Now in its 30th year, the competition’s founders assert that world conflicts would cease and climate change would halt if everyone simply came together to play.
While we may never know if this theory holds true, more than 50 contestants from 13 countries gathered over several days in Oulu—Finland’s newly designated European Capital of Culture—to compete.
The rules are straightforward: each contestant has 60 seconds to simulate playing a real guitar, while a panel of performing arts professionals evaluates their performance.
Local favorite and reigning champion Aapo “The Angus” Rautio claimed his second consecutive title with a score of 34.8.
The championships were integrated into the broader Delta Life summer carnival and the extensive Oulu August Festival celebrations.
Japan’s Nanami “Seven Seas” Nagura placed second, while Saladin “Six String Sal” Thomas secured third.
First held in 1996, the championships have grown immensely, broadcasting an immeasurable amount of good-natured fun and laughter to thousands of viewers worldwide via livestream.
However, despite the competitors’ enthusiasm and energy, there remains little to no sign of world peace being declared anytime soon.
