A WWE veteran has revived a former persona on this week’s SmackDown after an extended hiatus.

In January, Tommaso Ciampa departed WWE upon the expiry of his contract, subsequently signing with AEW.

Following Ciampa’s exit, Johnny Gargano appeared sporadically on WWE television, spending roughly six months off‑screen in a subdued, backstage role.

Numerous attempts to rekindle his competitive spirit—including repeated efforts by his wife, Candice LeRae—proved unsuccessful until Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk intervened.

Johnny Wrestling Makes a SmackDown Comeback

During the SmackDown broadcast held in Gargano’s hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, Punk approached Nick Aldis backstage, seeking a number‑one contender amid recent turmoil involving Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Gunther and Finn Balor.

Punk extended the opportunity to Gargano, who initially hesitated before rising off‑camera and accepting the challenge for the main‑event title bout.

Gargano entered to his classic “Rebel Heart” theme, signaling the return of the “Johnny Wrestling” character, although he ultimately fell short against Punk in the match.

After the contest, Gargano took to social media, posting a photo of himself standing upright with the caption:

He’s alive. #JohnnyWressurected

Prior to this appearance, Gargano had not competed on the WWE main roster since the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on the SmackDown episode preceding WrestleMania 42 in April.

Potential New Chapter for Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae

When Triple H assumed leadership of WWE’s main‑roster creative team in 2022, fans anticipated a resurgence of his former NXT Black & Gold talents, including the returns of Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae after their departure as free agents the previous year.

Despite that optimism, both have enjoyed limited success on the main roster; Gargano has captured two WWE Tag Team Championships, while LeRae holds a solitary Speed Championship reign.

The enthusiastic response to Gargano’s SmackDown performance may herald the beginning of the breakthrough many have hoped to see for the duo.
