Jon Bernthal’s ‘The Amateur’ Returns to Prime Video’s Top 10

2026 has been a busy year for Jon Bernthal. His appearances in The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day have pushed his cumulative box-office total beyond $3 billion, while his television work has also expanded with His & Hers, alongside Tessa Thompson, and The Bear, featuring Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Bernthal did not reprise Frank Castle in season two of Daredevil: Born Again, but he is set to star in The Punisher: One Last Kill, the first MCU project centered on the character. Reports suggest Marvel may bring Bernthal back for additional Punisher stories following the strong audience response to his performance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. How and when that could happen remains uncertain.

In 2025, Bernthal reunited with Ben Affleck for The Accountant 2, which became one of Prime Video’s most popular films of the year. He also introduced audiences to Frank Castle in season one of Daredevil: Born Again. Between those projects, he appeared in The Amateur, an action thriller with echoes of John Wick and Jason Bourne. Bernthal stars alongside Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne. Although the film grossed $96 million against a $60 million budget—well short of its estimated $120 million break-even point—it has found a stronger second life with viewers. The Amateur has now re-entered Prime Video’s streaming top 10 for a second time since its debut.

What Is ‘The Amateur’ About?

The official synopsis for The Amateur describes Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) as a gifted but intensely private decoder working from a basement office at CIA headquarters in Langley. After a terrorist attack in London kills his wife, Charlie’s superiors decline to pursue those responsible. Taking matters into his own hands, he launches a globe-spanning hunt for the people behind the attack, relying on his analytical skills to stay ahead of his pursuers and seek revenge. Rachel Brosnahan, star of Superman, also plays a major role. The screenplay by Gary Spinelli and Ken Nolan is based on Robert Littell’s novel. James Hawes directed the film.
