On Monday’s edition of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart sharply criticized President Donald Trump for abruptly ending his recent “Meet the Press” interview while facing persistent fact-checking from moderator Kristen Welker.
“One might characterize this as the tantrum of an exceptionally fragile individual whose paper-thin ego cannot withstand stepping outside the sycophantic embrace of his admirers,” Stewart remarked. “Frankly, I struggle to see it any other way. It is fundamentally that. It is disheartening. It is profoundly disheartening.”
Tensions escalated during the “Meet the Press” segment when Welker pressed the President on his intention to advance a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund designed to protect individuals claiming persecution by the federal government, including those involved in the January 6 Capitol attack. Trump asserted that the rioters had “lost everything” in the aftermath and claimed that on that day, “they had FBI agents ushering them into the building.” Welker immediately challenged the latter assertion, stating Trump had “no evidence of that.”
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with the weaponization fund,” Trump told Welker. “I love the idea, because people like you, the fake dirty press, the crooked press, people like stupid Biden, he’s not smart enough to know what’s going on, but people that surrounded him, surrounded his beautiful Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, what they did to the lives of people, they destroyed people. They sent people to jail who did nothing wrong.”
The discussion subsequently shifted to the 2020 presidential election, which Trump again labeled “rigged,” alongside allegations of fraud within the California election system. Throughout the exchange, Welker consistently interjected with fact-checks.
Eventually, Trump terminated the interview. Addressing Welker, he stated, “You’re a one-sided crooked network. Sorry. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time.”
