Jose Mourinho Signals Intent to Move On From Real Madrid Center-Back Raul Asencio

Nearly two weeks have passed since Jose Mourinho resumed training with the Real Madrid squad. The Merengues launched their preseason on July 13th, and in recent days, Arda Guler and Federico Valverde have rejoined the group following their World Cup commitments. The remaining internationals are expected to reintegrate into the squad within the coming days.

During this period, the new head coach has had ample opportunity to evaluate the current roster, leading to several early decisions regarding player futures. Notably, he has already approved a loan move for the young forward Franco Mastantuono.

Another significant decision involves center-back Raul Asencio. According to reports from SPORT, the Spaniard is not in the Portuguese manager’s long-term plans, a decision that has already been communicated directly to the player.

Real Madrid is reportedly open to facilitating Asencio’s exit via either a loan deal or a permanent transfer. While his market value has seen a decline from €40 million to €20 million over the past year, clubs such as Galatasaray and Lazio have expressed interest in the defender.

A primary obstacle to a potential transfer may be his substantial wage structure. Following a significant contract adjustment last summer, his total earnings—including salary and bonuses—have risen to €8 million.

Asencio is currently under contract with Real Madrid until 2031, meaning his ultimate decision will determine his future at the club. Although the defender was reportedly determined to prove his worth to Mourinho during preseason, he is likely aware that securing playing time will be a major challenge next season, given the intense competition for the two starting center-back positions and the potential for further defensive signings.
