Julia Holter Unveils Follow‑Up Album Materia, Debuts Lead Single “Fantasy”

After a two‑year intermission since her last LP, Something In The Room She Moves, LA‑based chamber pop artist Julia Holter is announcing her forthcoming companion album, Materia. The first single, “Fantasy,” drops today.

Holter describes “Fantasy” as a paradoxical meld of carefree energy and painstaking craft: “I spent over a year coaxing this track through numerous transformations, and I love that contradiction.” She notes the song’s dance‑floor urgency and its thematic undercurrents, “The line ‘blink at the light and hope to survive’ speaks to the uneasy calm of daydreaming in a repressive environment, and I was chasing a sanguine pulse.”

The new record retains the core lineup from Something In The Room She Moves—Elizabeth Goodfellow on drums, Devra Hoff on fretless bass, Maia on flute, Chris Speed on saxophone and clarinet, Tashi Wada on synthesizers, and Kenny Gilmore handling co‑production, engineering, and mixing. “Fantasy” is accompanied by a music video directed by Dicky Bahto, which you can view below.
