Julian Alvarez has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his World Cup remarks, asking Atletico Madrid supporters for forgiveness. The Argentine forward spoke in an interview with Movistar Plus Deportes after his 1-0 winner against Deportivo La Coruña at the Metropolitano secured victory for his side.

“I want to apologize to our supporters for what I said during the World Cup,” Alvarez said. “Those words were a mistake—both in how I expressed them and in the timing—and I fully understand the fans’ frustration. As a supporter myself, I would have been angry too, especially given how they have backed me all these years and, more recently, shown great generosity. I truly appreciate that.”

His tournament comments hinted at a desire to leave the club, angering supporters. Alvarez faced strong criticism from fans, who booed him at home matches and called for his departure.

Despite the backlash, he continued working to regain his best form. He broke his seasonal duck against Stuttgart in the Champions League, then became the match-winner against Deportivo La Coruña by scoring the only goal and securing three crucial points.

Alvarez also said he is feeling sharper on the pitch. “Little by little, I’m feeling good,” he said. “I thank my teammates for their support during this period. I feel better with the ball and physically. When things are going well in life, it shows on the field—family, time at home, other pursuits—it all matters. I feel good and ready to compete for everything.” Asked if the jeers could turn into cheers, he replied: “I hope so, through hard work and humility.”

The World Cup comments that sparked the backlash

The backlash began at the World Cup, when Alvarez spoke to Argentine media in the mixed zone after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria. The forward, reportedly frustrated by his club’s silence regarding Barcelona’s $116 million bid, confirmed he wanted to leave.

“I don’t think now is the right time to discuss this, but I cannot hide or pretend otherwise,” Alvarez told a reporter. “I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at the club, with those I needed to speak with. I believe a transfer is best for everyone, and I want to achieve my dream.”

The remarks left Alvarez in a difficult position, with supporters turning against him and pressure mounting at every home fixture. His move never materialized, and he remained in Madrid to face the fallout. Now, after finally scoring again, he has chosen to own his words and ask the fans to move forward.
