Rothesay County Championship, Division Two, Merchant Taylors’ School Ground, Northwood (day three)
Kent 350 & 254: Muyeye 65, Compton 64; Helm 3-31, Higgins 3-83
Middlesex 249 & 186-4: Geddes 37, du Plooy 36*; Singh 3-35
Middlesex (3pts) require 170 runs to defeat Kent (6 pts) with six wickets remaining.
Ekansh Singh dismantled Middlesex’s middle order, propelling Kent into a commanding position on the third day at Merchant Taylors’ School Ground.
Singh, who earlier in the match bowled a first-ball duck, returned with 3-35 as Middlesex wobbled from 68-0 to 103-3 while chasing a daunting 356 runs to win.
A late partnership between Ben Geddes (37) and leus du Plooy (36*) provided a glimmer of hope, but du Plooy’s dismissal before stumps left Middlesex at 186-4, still hovering over the required total.
Kent’s dominance was cemented through contrasting half-centuries from Tawanda Muyeye and Ben Compton, whose 64 and 65 runs respectively helped secure a 204-run lead after the follow-on.
The duo’s 93-run stand propelled Kent past 300, with Chris Benjamin (45) and skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond (39) adding further depth before the eventual all-out at 254.
Tom Helm (3-31) and Ryan Higgins (3-83) spearheaded the home attack, with Helm claiming the wickets of Compton and Bell-Drummond in quick succession.
Muyeye’s aggressive strokeplay, including sixes off Toby Roland-Jones and Noah Cornwell, underlined Kent’s intent. His dismissal via Zafar Gohar’s lbw ended a fiery chapter, but Kent’s total remained insurmountable for Middlesex.
The opening session saw Muyeye and Compton navigate seam movement effectively, with Compton’s 50 off 98 balls showcasing his composure before edging into Helms’ hands at cover.
Middlesex’s chase began brightly, with Luke Hollman and Sam Robson weathering the initial storm. However, Singh’s emergence in the evening session shifted the momentum, removing both batsmen and leaving Kent in control.
