Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Accused 9/11 Architect, to Stand Trial in June 2028

The individual accused of orchestrating the September 11, 2001 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, is scheduled to face trial in a U.S. military court in June 2028, according to an official announcement.

A representative confirmed that the trial will commence on June 5, 2028, at the military tribunal located at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where Mohammed is currently held.

Known by the initials “KSM,” Mohammed was a prominent figure within Al-Qaeda, serving as a top lieutenant to Osama bin Laden before his capture in Pakistan in March 2003.

After his apprehension, Mohammed was detained in secret CIA facilities for three subsequent years before being transferred to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in 2006.

The proceedings have been subject to multiple delays; notably, a plea bargain that would have excluded the death penalty was retracted last year.

A trained engineer, Mohammed has claimed responsibility for masterminding the 9/11 attacks “from A to Z” and was allegedly involved in several other significant plots against the United States, where he pursued his education.

The most severe of these operations was the 9/11 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 individuals when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center towers in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and crashed in a Pennsylvania field.

Mohammed has also admitted to involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six people, and to his role in the killing of U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002.

The U.S. administration utilizes the Guantanamo Bay facility to detain individuals captured during the “War on Terror” that followed the 9/11 attacks, in an effort to prevent them from seeking legal protections under American law.

At its peak, the prison held approximately 800 inmates; however, many have since been transferred to other countries, leaving a small fraction of the original population.
