American driver Kyle Kirkwood dominated Sunday’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix on Washington D.C.’s street circuit, starting from pole and leading 128 of the 147 laps. The Andretti Autosport racer claimed victory by just over three seconds, outpacing Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard (second) and Andretti teammate Will Power (third). At its peak, Kirkwood’s lead extended to over 15 seconds before gradually narrowing.
Championship frontrunner Alex Palou endured a disappointing 20th-place finish – his second-lowest result this season. The McLaren driver faced a cumulative setback: a drive-through penalty for a speeding violation, a delayed pit stop serving a five-second penalty, and mid-race contact that disrupted his rhythm.
Running position battles animated the race, with three additional drivers claiming lead-lap status: Graham Rahal (12 laps), Power (4 laps), and Scott McLaughlin (3 laps). Thirteen starters maintained contact with the lead lap throughout, leaving five competitors unclassified due to mechanical retirements. Rookie sensation Caio Collet (Andretti) ranked ninth among newcomers.
