Lean hog futures ended Tuesday’s session with mixed results, as gains ranging from 10 to 50 cents were offset by the nearby October contract declining 17 cents. The national average base hog price climbed to $76.54 per hundredweight on Tuesday afternoon, rising $1.53 from the prior day’s level. Meanwhile, the CME Lean Hog Index settled at $84.29 for September 20, marking a slight decline of 7 cents compared to the previous session.
USDA’s FOB plant pork cutout value decreased by 18 cents in the Tuesday afternoon report, settling at $93.96 per cwt. Among the primal cuts, only ham and loin showed gains, while the remaining four categories declined between 4 cents and $2.47. According to USDA data, estimated live hog slaughter reached 487,000 head on Tuesday—unchanged from Monday—bringing the weekly total to 966,000 head. This figure represents an increase of 17,000 head over last week and 5,813 head above year-earlier levels.
