Macron visits Saint Pierre and Miquelon as Canada strengthens ties with the EU

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon on Sunday for talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, weeks after Donald Trump posted an image depicting the islands under the US flag.

The visit marks the first trip to the Atlantic archipelago by a French president since 2014. It comes as Canada seeks closer relations with the European Union amid an increasingly contentious trade dispute with the United States.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is France’s sole remaining territory in North America. French officials said Macron’s visit would reaffirm French sovereignty while underscoring the close relationship between Paris and Ottawa.

“There’s no doubt [it ⁠is French],” Macron said after landing in the territory of 5,800 inhabitants late Saturday.
