Made Fresh Salads Recalls Cream Cheese, Deli-Style Salads Over Possible Listeria Exposure

New York-based Made Fresh Salads, Inc., issued a recall this week for all of its cream cheese products and ready-to-eat deli-style salads due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled cream cheese products include 5-pound and 30-pound tubs in several varieties, including apple cinnamon cream cheese, tofu vegetable spread, whipped cream cheese and scallion cream cheese.

The recall also includes numerous ready-to-eat salads, such as 5-pound chickpea salad, 5-pound bowtie pesto, 30-pound macaroni salad and 30-pound potato salad.

Other recalled products include 7-pound containers of chocolate pudding, 6-pound containers of vanilla pudding, 12-piece crab cakes and 12-piece potato croquettes.

The affected products carry expiration dates ranging from Sept. 3 to Sept. 18.

The cream cheese and salads were distributed in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx in 5-pound and 30-pound white plastic tubs bearing a Made Fresh Salads or Northside label, as well as in half-size aluminum pans.

Some products may have been repacked by retail locations into deli-style or other retail packaging, according to the company. Packaging and product codes may vary by purchase location.

The recall followed environmental sampling conducted by Made Fresh Salads and the Food and Drug Administration, which found Listeria monocytogenes in certain areas of the facility. The company has stopped producing and distributing the affected products while it and the FDA investigate the source of the contamination.

Listeria infection can cause fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Pregnant women may face miscarriage or stillbirth.

The infection can also lead to serious, potentially fatal illness in young children, older adults, frail individuals and people with weakened immune systems.

No illnesses linked to the recalled products have been reported.

Consumers who purchased the affected items should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
