Manchester United is reportedly preparing to intensify its pursuit of Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, with the club planning significant defensive overhaul this season.
The 24-year-old has been on the Red Devils’ radar for over two years, with Everton previously rejecting bids of £35million and £45million back in 2024.
Although injury setbacks temporarily slowed the chase, Branthwaite’s full return to fitness and impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign have placed him back at the top of United’s defensive targets.
Branthwaite Remains a Top Defensive Target for Manchester United
According to reports, Manchester United continues to view Branthwaite as a primary defensive target as the club evaluates options to reshape its backline.
Everton holds significant leverage in any negotiations, having secured Branthwaite to a new long-term contract last year that keeps him at Goodison Park until 2030. Reports suggest the Toffees could demand a fee of around £80million for the England international.
Manchester United has already made fresh contact with the defender’s representatives this season, according to TEAMtalk, as interest in his services also reportedly attracts attention from Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid.
Branthwaite’s outstanding qualities have earned high praise from Everton manager David Moyes, who has witnessed his development firsthand.
Following a commanding performance against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season, Moyes lauded the defender, stating, “Jarrad was excellent.” He further described him as “a really good player” with “far more to come.”
Branthwaite’s Profile Aligns with Manchester United’s Defensive Needs

Branthwaite’s physical and technical profile makes him an ideal fit for Manchester United, addressing several key weaknesses in the squad.
He is left-footed, physically dominant, quick across the ground, and highly comfortable defending large spaces. At just 24 years old, he possesses the perfect age profile to become a long-term cornerstone rather than a short-term fix.
The primary concern surrounding any potential deal is fitness. Branthwaite missed large portions of last season due to hamstring issues, meaning Manchester United would need absolute certainty that those problems are behind him before committing close to £80million.
However, his performances since returning have been highly encouraging, and he has successfully re-entered the England national team picture.
The club desperately needs more authority and athleticism at centre-back, especially if Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez are no longer considered long-term solutions.
