New Delhi, Oct 26: Devdutt Padikkal saw his innings end in heartbreaking circumstances on day three of the unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A at Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval. The Karnataka batter fell for 199 following a hotly contested caught‑behind decision.
When the appeal from New Zealand A seamer Zak Gibson was upheld, Padikkal remained rooted at the crease for a moment, protesting the ruling. He maintained the ball had slipped past his pads on the leg side rather than making contact with the bat.
Gibson delivered a leg‑side ball as Padikkal looked to glance it to the boundary. The bat missed the ball, which grazed the pads, and wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay gathered it swiftly. A faint sound of the ball clipping the bat was heard, but Padikkal was convinced he had not edged it. The umpire’s finger went up despite the appeal appearing weak.
Disappointed, the left‑hander walked off, shaking his head, before teammate Yash Rathod offered a consoling tap on the shoulder in acknowledgment of an outstanding performance cut short.

Padikkal faced 248 deliveries and hit 24 fours and three sixes for his 199 runs, a vital contribution when India A were in dire need of runs. The loss of just one run prevented him from attaining a well‑deserved double century.
India A had collapsed to 113 in their first innings. After being reduced to 10 for two, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul dismissed cheaply, the side faced another slump.
With Padikkal’s leadership and resilience, however, India A recovered and stayed in the contest. His innings, though ultimately curtailed, kept the match alive until the controversial exit brought it to a close.
