Mastodon Releases Commemorative Short Film Honoring the Legacy of Brent Hinds

Approaching the one-year anniversary of the tragic passing of co-founder Brent Hinds, Mastodon has released a new short film titled The Mastodon in the Room. Hinds, the band’s longtime singer and guitarist, died at age 51 following a motorcycle accident in August 2025. The film serves as a collective space for the band and their fanbase to navigate the grief following his loss, while offering an honest reflection on the complexities of their relationship.

The Mastodon in the Room utilizes a blend of new interviews, archival concert footage, and behind-the-scenes clips to chronicle Hinds’ profound influence on the band’s musical evolution. While celebrating his creative contributions, his bandmates also speak candidly about his battles with substance abuse and his departure from the group months prior to his death. “We really were coming from a place of love,” drummer and co-founder Brann Dailor explains in the film. “Maybe this will be some kind of bottom for him. We had to set some boundaries and take care of our own mental health.”

The tribute follows the recent release of the band’s new track, “Your Ghost Again,” a song written in Hinds’ memory. Reflecting on the recording process, Dailor shared the emotional difficulty of the experience: “When we were in the studio recording, I kept seeing Brent. I’d see him on my right holding the guitar because that’s where he’d usually be. You get a little jolt of excitement because you think you’re actually seeing them, but then you remember they’re not here and it takes you down a notch.”

Co-founded in 2000 by Hinds, Dailor, bassist Troy Sanders, and guitarist Bill Kelliher, Mastodon has become a cornerstone of the heavy metal genre. Since their 2002 debut Remission, the group has released seven subsequent studio albums, garnered six Grammy nominations, and secured the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for “Sultan’s Curse” from their album Emperor of Sand. Hushed and Grim, released in 2021, stands as the final studio LP to feature Hinds.
