The Melbourne Renegades BBL team have concluded a 15-year partnership with Marvel Stadium, transitioning to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as their primary home venue. This change will see marquee fixtures, including the Melbourne Derby against the Stars, relocate to the iconic ground for the upcoming season and beyond.
The club has confirmed that two home matches will be held at the MCG this season, with the reverse derby providing a third match in BBL16. Meanwhile, Junction Oval will host two additional home games, leveraging newly installed floodlights for evening fixtures.
The move follows Cricket Victoria’s restructuring efforts to consolidate WBBL and BBL operations under a single Melbourne entity, potentially paving the way for licensing privatization. Interim management structures are currently in place as the organization navigates this transition.
“Bringing Renegades matches to the MCG aligns with Melbourne’s cricketing heritage and offers fans access to one of the world’s premier venues,” said Max Abbott, the Renegades’ general manager. “Last season’s Derby showcased the electric atmosphere we aim to replicate, with over 68,000 attendees creating unforgettable experiences.”
While honoring Marvel Stadium’s contribution—including the BBL08 Championship victory—Abbott acknowledged the venue’s role in the club’s history: “Their partnership spanned 15 years of remarkable moments, and we’re grateful for that legacy.”
Renegades captain Will Sutherland emphasized the team’s enthusiasm for the new setting: “The MCG’s atmosphere during the Derby was exceptional. Every player relishes the chance to compete in front of large crowds here. Though the off-season brought uncertainty, the squad is eager to represent our fans in this historic venue.”
The relocation will also mark the end of BBL games in Geelong for the first time in five years. Marvel Stadium’s tenure, while significant, faced challenges such as outfield recovery issues and pitch quality concerns. Despite its retractable roof preventing rain delays, it required rule adjustments for ball-strike incidents.
