In honor of Black Music Month, Tiny Desk pays tribute to the enduring legacy of BET. Much like the network that prioritized Black artistry, these performances embody the true spirit of Black music.
Watching 8Ball & MJG arrive at the NPR studios for their Tiny Desk session, it is impossible not to be struck by their status as true elder statesmen of rap. Eschewing the drama and turbulence that often plague veteran acts, these two emcees remain in peak form and ready to perform. These Memphis icons, deeply influenced by the blues, perfectly encapsulate the soulful essence of Southern hip-hop.
While many of their contemporaries from the 1990s relied almost exclusively on samplers and drum machines, 8Ball & MJG distinguish themselves through the use of live instrumentation. This approach is on full display during their set, which begins with instrumental passages from “Pimps” before 8Ball dives into the title track of their 1993 debut, Comin’ Out Hard. The performance continues with three selections from their 2004 album Living Legends, ultimately concluding with the classic “Space Age Pimpin’.”
It is rare for iconic groups to maintain such long-term cohesion; often, original bonds fray into purely professional arrangements. However, 8Ball & MJG demonstrate a genuine familial chemistry that shines through every moment of their Tiny Desk appearance.
