German electronic music producer Jan St. Werner, known for his work with the duo Mouse on Mars, is preparing to release his latest solo album. The new record, titled Squares Will Fall, will be released on November 13 through Thrill Jockey records. The album showcases an impressive roster of guest contributors, including Sufjan Stevens, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, Zach Condon of Beirut, and Ben Lanz of The National.

According to a Bandcamp biography, the origins of “Squares Will Fall” trace back to 2012, when Werner initially composed a 30-minute version of the piece for a friend’s 30th birthday celebration. Over time, the composition evolved and became the foundation for an improvised collaboration between Vernon and Werner during Mouse on Mars’ Dimensional People recording sessions at Vernon’s Wisconsin studio. Werner later presented a live rendition of “Squares Will Fall” at the 2021 Ural Industrial Biennial, where speakers were suspended from the venue’s ceiling and actively moved by performers throughout the performance, creating a dynamic sonic experience.
The complete track listing includes two additional compositions: “Swamp Brains,” featuring vocalist Rosanne Rubino, and “Flötotto,” which showcases Stevens on drum machine alongside Lanz’s trombone and bass work. Werner’s previous solo effort, Space Synthesis, was released in 2023.
