New Delhi, August 28: Namibia secured a memorable victory over South Africa, winning by 18 runs in the opening match of the men’s T20I tri-series in Windhoek, extending their unbeaten record against the Proteas in the format.
Frylinck Anchors Namibia’s Innings with Fifty-Four Ball Fifty
Batting first, Namibia posted 163/9 in their 20 overs, with opener Jan Frylinck leading the charge with a superb 60 off 38 balls.
Frylinck’s explosive innings helped Namibia establish a competitive total despite some regular wicket losses. He combined with Louren Steenkamp for a crucial 84-run opening partnership, with 57 runs coming during the powerplay.
Captain Gerhard Erasmus praised his team’s aggressive approach, stating that the top order’s intent set the tone for the innings.
“I think the buy-in from the players to take the game aggression was key. In that powerplay, the batters set that specific tone, and then guys will always follow when your leaders do that type of work,” Erasmus commented.
South Africa’s chase stumbled early with the dismissals of Jordan Hermann and Lhuan-dre Pretorius during the powerplay.
Brevis Keeps Hope Alive But Namibia Hold Their Nerve
Dewald Brevis kept South Africa’s hopes alive with an impressive 75 off 50 deliveries, hitting five sixes and four boundaries, but lacked sufficient support as Namibia’s bowlers maintained the pressure.
JJ Smit contributed valuable runs with the bat before taking three wickets for 31 runs to help restrict the visitors. Ruben Trumpelmann also claimed three wickets, finishing with figures of 3/24.
Smit described the victory as emotionally significant for Namibian cricket. “It feels surreal,” he said afterwards. “We beat the Proteas again. Just a really proud moment for Cricket Namibia and Namibia as a whole.”
Erasmus emphasized that this win proves Namibia’s previous successes against stronger oppositions weren’t coincidental. “This is very important because it shows we do belong, and it wasn’t a one-off,” he stated.
Looking ahead, the Namibian captain confirmed that reaching the tri-series final is now their primary target.
South Africa will next face Zimbabwe in Windhoek on August 29, while Namibia will look to build on what has been a defining victory that further cements their growing reputation in T20 international cricket.
