Nearly 1,000 people were arrested across France on Saturday as a fresh wave of mass demonstrations swept the country, drawing more than 400,000 participants to the streets.
While the majority of protests proceeded peacefully, violent confrontations with police erupted in several major cities, including Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Rennes.
In the capital, a journalist on the ground witnessed riot police deploy tear gas and charge crowds near Porte de Vincennes on the city’s southeastern edge, while some protesters launched fireworks at officers. Authorities also utilized a water cannon to disperse demonstrators and conducted identity checks around Place de la Nation.
The government had significantly bolstered security operations following the chaos that marred nationwide cost-of-living protests the previous weekend, which devolved into violence and looting. Approximately 70,000 security personnel were mobilized for Saturday’s actions, supplemented by military units from Opération Sentinelle assigned to guard key sites and free up police resources.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez commended the security forces for their efforts but accused “individuals from the far-left and radical far-left” of seeking to “sow disorder, especially as the marches were dispersing.” In a social media post, he condemned the acts as unacceptable, citing disturbances in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Grenoble, Nantes, Angers, and Lille.
The Yellow Vests movement has called for further demonstrations on 31 October.
South of the capital, authorities maintained a heavy security presence around the hard-right National Rally party’s congress in Orléans, which attracted both supporters and counter-demonstrators on Saturday. The party is scheduled to hold a major rally on Sunday to formally launch Marine Le Pen’s presidential campaign. According to the Prefecture of the Centre-Val de Loire region and the Loiret department, 3,000 law enforcement and emergency personnel were deployed in Orléans as 13,000 demonstrators marched through the city.
