Netflix sports anchor Elle Duncan shared insights on her coverage of the WNBA during a period marked by controversy, positioning Sophie Cunningham as a central force behind what is now being framed as a “culture war.”
Cunningham’s comments regarding trans athletes earlier this year drew wide attention to the league, yet the public focus largely avoided the players and the on‑court events themselves.
Elle Duncan suggests Sophie Cunningham supporters have “reduced” WNBA to a “culture war”
In a discussion with Front Office Sports, Netflix analyst and network anchor Elle Duncan explained why she perceives the WNBA as having deteriorated into an increasingly toxic environment.
She argued that individuals drawn to the league by particular agendas and aiming to politicize it—often disregarding both the athletes and the sport—have crowded out meaningful dialogue, reducing the league’s discourse to a political conflict.
Duncan stated: “It is profoundly toxic. Experiencing a toxic partnership reveals the cause; the appeal lies partly in the league’s remarkable community, a unique atmosphere built on excellence. Yet compressing that spirit into a culture war is morally repugnant and unacceptable.”
“Improvement has never materialized; we once expected the situation to settle as concerns waned and regulation took hold, but progress continues without resolution. Insisting that any criticism harms a single group erodes constructive conversation,” she continued.
Although Elle Duncan spoke without naming the individual explicitly, the evidence points clearly to the fan base of Sophie Cunningham as the primary source of the escalation.
Sophie Cunningham has become a prominent figure among conservative media for her stance against trans athletes, giving those influencers a platform that seldom addressed core sporting issues.
Her influence was so substantial that even U.S. President Donald Trump referenced Cunningham’s views, though his remarks highlighted a lack of technical basketball knowledge in his review.
