Brazil’s record goal scorer continues to struggle with injuries after being named in their World Cup 2026 squad

Neymar has been ruled unfit to compete in Brazil’s second World Cup match due to a persistent calf injury, according to an official statement from the Brazilian football confederation.
The Brazilian Football Confederation announced Thursday that the forward will not accompany the national team for their Group C match against Haiti in Philadelphia.
“He will remain in New Jersey to complete the final stage of his rehabilitation process,” the federation stated.
Neymar holds the distinction of being Brazil’s leading international goalscorer with 79 goals, surpassing the iconic Pelé’s tally of 77 during his record-setting World Cup campaign.
The 34-year-old will continue his medical treatment at the team’s hotel facilities under close supervision.
Neymar managed to participate in physical conditioning exercises on Tuesday and partial training sessions with teammates on Wednesday, receiving enthusiastic applause from fellow players upon returning to the pitch.
Since his return to the team’s training camp while managing a right leg injury, he has not yet resumed full squad sessions.
Anticipating participation in his fourth World Cup appearance, Neymar recently underwent medical assessments on his right calf – an injury sustained during his club commitment with Santos on May 17.
Brazil, the reigning five-time World Cup champions, commenced their tournament campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco on Saturday.
The selection of 34-year old Neymar for Brazil’s 2026 World Cup roster by coach Carlo Ancelotti triggered extensive public controversy within Brazil itself.
