With a new four-game window presenting unique challenges for managers across Europe, diverse approaches emerged on the international stage.
Germany boss Jurgen Klopp named effectively two separate squads for his side’s two pairs of fixtures, while Ukraine made 10 changes between their first two games and then nine in their defeat to Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill had warned that the condensed schedule would pose particular difficulties for smaller nations, and he accordingly kept changes to a minimum.
Across the four games, O’Neill started only 15 different players. Two of those adjustments were enforced: Richard Ballard succumbed to a hamstring injury, and Ethan Galbraith was absent to attend the birth of his child.
Despite the relatively small starting pool, this window will be remembered as the moment Northern Ireland’s depth was tested and passed with flying colours.
O’Neill was without talisman Connor Bradley and the reliable Ali McCann entering the window, and then lost Ballard to a hamstring injury after the first game in Tbilisi.
Young centre-backs Jay McConville, 21, and Tom Atcheson, 20, looked ready for this level, while Ciaron Brown started all four games and earned praise for often having to bide his time in past squads.
Kieran Morrison, Terry Devlin and Brodie Spencer all impressed when given a chance against Ukraine.
O’Neill heaped praise on his squad across the board, stating: “For me it’s been one of the most enjoyable windows I’ve had as an international manager, and that’s been because of the players.” He added: “How they’ve applied themselves, how desperate they are to do well, that’s a real positive. We’ve a brilliant group of players and a lot of them I think will play international football for a long time.”
