Obsessionthe blockbuster horror thriller starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, hit another major box office milestone over the weekend.

Written and directed by YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker (Milk & Serial), Obsession has become one of the most remarkable success stories in modern Hollywood. The film, produced on a $750,000 budget, was acquired for approximately $15 million by Focus Features at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.

Also starring Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter, the film follows Bear (Johnston), whose wish for Nikki (Navarrette) to love him more than anyone else triggers deadly, unintended consequences.

The film opened in theaters with $17.1 million from 3,016 North American venues on May 15, eventually surpassing its opening gross within four weekends.

On June 8, Obsession became the highest‑grossing release from Focus Features, and shortly thereafter it overtook The Blair Witch Project as the highest‑grossing independent horror acquisition of all time, with a worldwide total exceeding $403 million (unadjusted for inflation).

‘Obsession’s’ Running Worldwide Box Office Tally Stands At $403 Million

Five days after its digital release via premium video on demand, Obsession added $5.3 million from 2,640 North American theaters, pushing its domestic total to $245.3 million. Combined with $157.7 million in international earnings, the worldwide gross now stands at $403 million.

In its first week on PVOD, the film topped the Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video rental charts in the United States.
