Clashes erupted between demonstrators and riot police in Paris on Saturday as protests across France escalated into violence after dark. What began as a largely peaceful day of demonstrations deteriorated into unrest, with protesters hurling projectiles and fireworks at security forces.
Authorities deployed approximately 70,000 officers nationwide for a second consecutive weekend, utilizing tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. The Interior Ministry estimated 400,000 people participated in Saturday’s actions, resulting in nearly 1,000 arrests.
Reporting from Paris, Europe correspondent Nick Beake indicates there are few immediate signs the turbulence will subside.
