Sixty-two years after the Beatles’ final performance of “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” McCartney performed the song as a solo artist for the first time at a Madison Square Garden wedding reception.
Paul McCartney reportedly performed the Beatles classic “I Want to Hold Your Hand” live for the first time since 1964 at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding reception.
McCartney, comparable to Stevie Nicks, was among the marquee guests at the wedding, and People reported that he chose the occasion to play a song he had not performed live since the Beatles’ early years, and a track he had never performed as a solo act before.
“After the ceremony, Taylor’s mom Andrea invited everyone into the reception room where the stage was set up,” a source told People.
Setlist.fm indicates that McCartney’s most recent live performance of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” occurred on September 20, 1964 at the Beatles’ concert at New York’s Paramount Theatre. The song remained unperformed by him for 62 years, until he played it at Swift’s wedding.
McCartney and Swift, who shared a cover of Rolling Stone’s Musicians on Musicians in 2020, have consistently praised each other’s work. McCartney recently remarked that Swift’s level of fame parallels the Beatles’ historic impact.
