Authorities in Davie, Florida, have confirmed that an investigation into an assault allegation involving New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith remains active. On Tuesday, the Davie Police Department issued a statement clarifying the case status after conflicting reports emerged a day earlier regarding whether the matter had been closed.
“We were informed yesterday evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives,” the department stated. “It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time.”
The update resolves confusion from Monday, when initial indications suggested the case was closed, only for authorities to later reverse course. The criminal inquiry proceeds independently of any potential league action; the NFL may still review the incident for possible discipline under its Personal Conduct Policy regardless of the criminal investigation’s ultimate outcome.
