Pope Leo XIV addressed pressing social issues during a prayer vigil in Barcelona on Tuesday, emphasizing the urgent need to address mental health crises and domestic violence after hearing heartfelt testimonies from local residents.
Following the account of a young woman who attempted suicide, the Pope urged public health institutions to prioritize combating the “invisible and widespread malaise” surrounding mental health. His comments underscored the consequences of societal pressures and systemic neglect in modern “advanced” communities.
“We are witnessing a dangerous imbalance in our progress narrative,” the Pope stated. “When societal advancement comes at the cost of human well-being, we must reevaluate our priorities to restore dignity and equilibrium to people’s lives.”
The visit marks Day Four of the Pope’s historic trip to Spain, which has included a mass for 1.5 million attendees in Madrid and an unprecedented address to the Spanish parliament. Upcoming events include blessing the iconic spire of Sagrada Família—the world’s tallest church—and conducting mass at the site before traveling to the Canary Islands to meet migrants and mourn casualties of the migration route.

‘Value what is important’
The Pope called on younger generations to resist fleeting societal distractions, advocating for mindfulness and purpose. “A social system that sidelines human value breeds injustice and existential poverty,” he declared.
Despite decades of declining religious participation in Spain, a traditional Catholic stronghold, local observer Roberto Crespo expressed optimism about the Pope’s reception. “Catalonia and Barcelona will demonstrate enduring faith and devotion far beyond superficial perceptions,” noted the 44-year-old carpenter interviewed by AFP.
During the vigil, the Pope interspersed Spanish and Catalan remarks, earning applause each time he switched languages. The itinerary also included a visit Tuesday to Barcelona’s Gothic Cathedral, drawing early crowds amid heightened security measures.
