Portugal is widely celebrated for its warm hospitality, consistently topping traveler preference lists in global surveys. Against this backdrop, Porto’s recent recognition as Europe’s most welcoming city comes as no surprise.
The honour originates from Condé Nast Traveller’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards, where the voting public also placed Lisbon a close second in the same category (source in Portuguese).
The award aims to highlight destinations where “hospitality shines brightest” and locals are quick to assist, whether you’re deciphering a restaurant menu or navigating the metro.
The accolade for Invicta – Porto’s historic nickname – underscores the city’s surge as a top urban getaway, prized by food lovers and cultural explorers alike for its authentic vibe and relaxed atmosphere, according to the magazine.
Condé Nast suggests, “Unwind in a sun‑kissed azulejo‑tiled plaza or enjoy petiscos – petite plates of local flavors – alongside residents in a neighborhood bistro, and you’ll quickly discover why Porto’s warm hospitality makes it a place many return to again and again.”
Lisbon follows closely. The publication notes that “few European capitals rival the sun‑drenched charm of Portugal’s capital, perched on seven hills along the Tagus, creating a maze of winding alleys, soulful fado scenes, and delectable pastéis de nata.”
What truly ties the city together, however, is its people. A youthful, inclusive energy permeates the steep streets, offering visitors ample chances to engage. The vibrant café culture is essential—gathered groups share their morning espressos—while the Festival of Santo António transforms the cobbled lanes into bustling open‑air celebrations.
Rounding out the European top five are Amsterdam (Netherlands), Stockholm (Sweden) and Valletta (Malta).
