Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique admitted his surprise upon learning that Manchester City had been found guilty of violating Premier League financial regulations and expressed hopes that the club would avoid facing significant penalties.
City will host European champions PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday (20:00 BST), marking their first home fixture since being found responsible for the majority of 115 charges.
“There is a lot of noise around Manchester City and there is often noise around big clubs,” Enrique stated during a press conference at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
“We just have to wait and see what the final decision will be. I hope everything works out well for Manchester City because I believe what they’ve achieved on the pitch has been remarkable over recent years, and they certainly deserved to win all the trophies they’ve claimed during that time.
“Now we must await whatever the authorities decide or what the appointed judge concludes.”
An independent regulatory body determined that City violated financial regulations over a nine-year span from 2009 to 2018 through creating allegedly fraudulent contracts with commercial partners to covertly inject over £830 million into their football operations.
City maintains its innocence and has officially appealed the ruling.
Luis Enrique further commented: “Initially, hearing the news was surprising, but we must respect the process and await the ultimate outcome.
“It falls under the jurisdiction of the authorities to make these determinations. However, focusing purely on football, their achievements were justified. I admire their style of play. Beyond that, we must simply await the decision.
“The accolades earned on the field remain valid achievements. They rightfully deserved those victories, and I sincerely hope they can avoid severe consequences. Nonetheless, we must wait and see.”
