India are preparing for a multi-format series against New Zealand comprising five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Test matches. While the white-ball fixtures offer players a chance to cement their places, the Test series carries significant weight for India’s standing in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Ahead of the opening Test, former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara revealed his preferred playing XI in a video for Cricinfo. His selection features an experienced opening partnership, a promising talent at number three, two wicketkeeper-batters, and a pace attack spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah.

Pujara Backs Rahul and Jaiswal to Open

Pujara has endorsed KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opening combination for the first Test in Wellington. The pairing blends Rahul’s experience with Jaiswal’s aggressive intent. At number three, Pujara has selected Devdutt Padikkal, pushing Shubman Gill to number four. Padikkal’s inclusion follows his impressive form in Sri Lanka, where he scored two centuries.

The left-hander could offer middle-order stability and a different angle against New Zealand’s bowling. Pujara has also slotted Rishabh Pant in at five and Dhruv Jurel at six, though Pant’s participation remains contingent on fitness clearance. Fielding two wicketkeeper-batters provides substantial batting depth.

Ravindra Jadeja occupies the number seven role as the primary spin-bowling all-rounder, followed by Nitish Kumar Reddy at eight. This structure preserves batting depth while supplying additional bowling options.

Bumrah Headlines Three-Pronged Pace Attack

Pujara’s XI names Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna as the three frontline seamers. Bumrah’s capacity for movement and breakthroughs makes him indispensable, while Siraj and Krishna offer complementary pace and support. Jadeja serves as the sole specialist spinner, though his all-round skills afford tactical flexibility. Nitish Reddy adds a fourth seam option alongside his batting contributions.

India’s broader squad includes further bowling resources such as Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar. Deep and Kamboj have been recalled for the two-Test series, bolstering the pace reserves. The opening Test begins on November 19 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, with the second Test scheduled for Christchurch from November 27.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s Predicted India XI: KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
