London’s Electric Brixton hosted a memorable evening on Friday, October 16th, as punk legends gathered to commemorate five decades of women in punk and pay homage to the legendary Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex. The all-female supergroup brought together an impressive lineup featuring Lora Logic (X-Ray Spex/Essential Logic), Paul Dean (X-Ray Spex), Gina Birch (The Raincoats), Hollie Cook (The Slits), and Akiko Matsuura (Comanechi/Pre), alongside other notable acts including Big Joanie, Essential Logic, Gina Birch & The Unreasonables, and HotWax.
The celebration featured powerful performances of iconic punk anthems, including X-Ray Spex’s seminal tracks “Oh Bondage Up Yours!” and “The Day The World Turned Dayglo” from their groundbreaking 1978 album Germfree Adolescents, as well as The Slits’ “Typical Girls” and their influential 1979 cover of “Heard It Through The Grapevine” from their album Cut.
