The Wall Street Journal reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a summit next month with US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The proposed meeting aims to negotiate an end to the four-year Ukraine conflict, with terms that could potentially favor Moscow.
According to the paper, citing a former Russian intelligence officer, Putin’s suggestion emerged from a telephone call with Trump on October 9. This conversation also led to an agreement for the United States to purchase Russian diesel and facilitate its sale on the global market.
Russia and the United States possess the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals, while China has rapidly expanded its nuclear capabilities in recent years, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
The Wall Street Journal report did not specify whether Putin’s proposed summit is directly linked to the ongoing denuclearization discussions.
