Crypto price oracle Pyth Network missed its documented 16:00 UTC cutover deadline on Aug. 26, introducing a new requirement for developers calling its Hermes price‑delivery service directly: such requests must now include an API key.
Developers integrating through existing protocol connections do not need to take any additional action.
Within Pyth’s migration guide, protocols that already rely on the oracle are exempt from manual updates.
The documentation states that the former hermes.pyth.network address now redirects to the upgraded backend, with authentication mandated after the deadline. Developers alternatively can supply the key via a bearer token or SDK access token.
Notification clarifies that routing paths and response structures remain unchanged.
Where incomplete Pyth migrations can fail
Pyth’s upgraded Hermes endpoint serves payloads intended for the enhanced Pyth Core contract. The migration guide warns that modifying the endpoint independently of contract generation, or performing the opposite operation, can leave an application unable to verify price updates.
The Daily Brief
The signal, before the noise.
The early deployment window created uncertainty among projects adopting Pyth, particularly regarding synchronization delays and partial adoption patterns. Careful monitoring remains essential as protocols transition to the new authentication requirements.
An application lacking the required key may fail to complete authenticated Hermes requests, whereas configurations where the endpoint and contract settings are misaligned can result in received data that fails on-chain verification during integration.
In a pull‑oracle architecture, either scenario can halt a price‑update transaction until the configuration is corrected.
The Sui ecosystem faced particular challenges due to its reliance on object IDs rather than direct package swaps. Consequently, Sui‑using teams were obligated to update both the client software fetching price data and the on‑chain Move contract dependency.
Pyth’s dedicated Sui guide instructed these developers to point SuiPriceServiceConnection at the upgraded Hermes endpoint using an access token, and to migrate the oracle dependency in Move.toml to the new package revision.
Cardano now has institutional-grade infrastructure, but a glaring $40 million liquidity gap threatens to stall growth
A real‑time DefiLlama oracle report listed Pyth supporting approximately 316 protocols and roughly $2.7 billion in total value under settlement. This figure is dynamic and may double‑count exposures through borrowed values and dual counting settings, serving as a proxy for value within protocols leveraging Pyth.
Following the August 26 deadline check, no confirmed outages, stale‑price events, fund losses, or official confirmations that every redirect and migration completed cleanly were reported.
The immediate validation step centered on confirming whether direct callers could satisfy authentication requirements and whether their endpoints, SDK implementations, and on‑chain contract generations remained synchronized.
