Following every home victory, the New York Yankees typically fill their clubhouse with “Theme from New York, New York.” It is a well-established ritual that has remained largely intact since the 1980s, a period during which the franchise has amassed numerous championships to justify the tradition.

However, such customs often provide easy ammunition for pranks whenever the Yankees fall short. The team discovered this lesson the hard way on Wednesday night, when the Tampa Bay Rays commemorated their ALDS sweep by playing their rival’s signature victory song.

During Tampa Bay’s locker room festivities, the classic anthem played loudly while teammates sang along and swayed to the beat.

The Rays were evidently pleased to have defeated one of their top rivals in three straight games, but none enjoyed the moment quite like Junior Caminero, who mimed clearing Yankees fans out of the stadium once the final out was recorded.

Caminero also replicated former Yankees radio voice John Sterling’s distinctive post-win call, famously delivered as, “The Yankees win. Theeeeeeeeeee Yankees win.”

Caminero’s rendition swapped out a single term, and the implication is clear.

Securing the series win moves the Rays into the American League Championship Series for the third time in club history. They have never lost at that stage, reaching the World Series in every previous appearance.

The Rays have not yet secured their ALCS opponent. Despite taking a 2-0 series lead, the Chicago White Sox fell to the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. Chicago can advance on Thursday with a win over Cleveland; otherwise, a winner-take-all Game 5 will take place on Saturday.
